Indianapolis 500
The Indianapolis 500 is a race where a bunch of extremely powerefull cars race around a track until they have driven 500 miles. The track is dead simple and goes around around in a single oval but when driving around at 200+ miles per hour a tiny mistake is enough to crash into the side or into an opponent. This game is not an arcade game but more a simulation as it lets you adjust various settings on your car to improve performance.
You can start either a practice run, a qualify or a race, it’s best to start praticing first as you won’t easily get the hang of things if you just go about like an arcade game. During practice you will have to test settings you add to the car to make it perform better. Things like spoiler height, tire inflation level, springs, gearing and even the amount of fuel to save on precious weight all in the name of speed. Apart from the settings though the race is fairly straightforward, in theory that is. You simply have to go round the course as fast as possible and stay ahead of your competitors.
The graphics in the game don’t look very special as there are no textures and the sky and the ground are a single flat color with an occasional marking, if you don’t mind that though then the simulation part is definately better than most racing games around. The fact that you can customize the car is a great option allowing you to tune a car to the way you can drive it the best. If you’re looking for a proper indy 500 game that’s not geared toward arcade action then give this game a go.

This game was released for two different systems here are some notes:
Amiga | Released in 1990. Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91. This is the same as the DOS version. |
DOS | Released in 1989. Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS and Win2k PC. Seems to run ok on windows system but on mine it was a tad slow, probably due to my weird system probably so check it on your own machine. |
