Elevator action

Elevator action is a pretty wellknown game and in it you control a secret agent who has to retrieve stolen documents which are now hidden inside a skyscraper. You’ll start your mission on the roof of the building and work your way down from there using mainly elevators but occasionally you can use the stairs. The documents aren’t really well hidden though as the rooms containing them have a red door and you only have to enter to grab them. Obviously things aren’t that easy and the buildings are full of enemy personnel and you must take them out if they get too pesky. There are two ways to put enemies out of action the most obvious of which is to shoot them however you can also shoot at lamps which will drop and if you aim correctly they will knock out the enemy below. Shooting lamps will darken that area of the building however and it will be more difficult for you to see approaching people. Once you’ve collected all the documents and safely make your way to the bottom of the building you can hop into the getaway car and move onto your next assigment.

When arcades were still highly visited places games like these were pretty much the norm as they let you get into the action quickly and there is virtually no learning curve. This does mean however that after the initial encounter there is very little in the way of extra’s or new features to discover. This limits the playtime a bit as going in building after building collecting documents can become boring. The graphics don’t help much either as every building is simply filled with hallways and doors and they all look alike. I know many people who played this game when it was originally released which often increases the enjoyment you get from a game after such a long time. Those that haven’t will most likely not get that much out of it but while it lasts you can have some fun with the game.

Overal rating: 7/10

This game was released for many different systems here are some notes:

Amstrad CPC Released in 1987.
The use of colors is a bit awkward as I’ve never seen a building with pink interiors but hey you never know.
Atari 2600 This version was never publicly released but there were beta-copies for sale at some show. It’s about 90-95% finished and plays quite well apart from having simpler grahics.
C64 Released in 1986.
Graphics aren’t very good and you cannot duck under bullets which removes an important gameplay aspect.
NES Released in 1985.
Almost arcade perfect down to the way you enter the building.
ZX Spectrum Released in 1986.
Less colorfull than the others but the higher resolution makes it look similar.
Others These versions are not available.
Gameboy released 1in 1991.
MSX released in 1985.
