Dark half, the

The Dark half is an adventure game based on the horror novel of the same name by Stephen King. You play the part of Thad Beaumont who has an undeveloped twin inside him as the intro shows you. Years later Thad is a succesful novelist writing under the alias of George Stark but he is forced to reveal his true identity before someone else does it for him. Symbolically he buries his alter-ego but that night George Stark comes to life and commits horrible crimes everywhere implicating you in the process!

The game is played with a point and click interface with your standard commands much like the old scumm games from Lucasarts. Things like use, open, talk to are used to interact with items and people. You quickly find out things are wrong as the police suspects you in various crimes and murders and much of the game is spend trying to gather evidence that you in fact did NOT commit these crimes. At the end of a day the police will question you and you will have to show evidence or talk your way out of an arrest. George will come after you and your wife and you will have to run for your life which isn’t easy as everybody thinks you are a murderer. Throughout the game sparrows play an important part in the story and you slowly figure out they are the link between this and another realm, eventually they will come for you but it will be up to you to figure out how to make sure they take George and not you.

Graphically the game is pretty average, the closeups are quite well done but the regular background and characters sprites lack detail. There are some nice tunes that fit the mood well and some sound effects as well. As an adventure game this isn’t the best you can get but the game’s not too difficult and for an adventuring fix this isn’t too bad.

Overal rating: 6.5/10
