Airborne ranger
The airborne rangers are elite units of the U.S. Army and their mission often involves going deep into enemy territory with little or no support. In this game you play a single ranger and you’ll have to complete a number of missions ranging from destroying an outpost to capturing an enemy officer.
You start by naming your ranger and choosing a mission, or you can also opt to do a campaign which will require you to complete all the missions. Once you select a mission and a difficulty level you can select the equipment that is provided for you in three bags. You can select things like ammo, grenades and even rocket launchers to your own liking but ofcourse you could just go with the standard equipment. Once you get the hang of the missions a bit better you will likely select more personalized equipment. After that you’re off and you and you equipment will be dropped by an airplane, you can drop the three bags of equipment where you like but I suggest you drop them scattered over the entire field as you can only carry so much at one time. When you reach the end of the level you can parachute yourself out of the plane and your mission will begin in earnest.
The playing field is always a vertically scrolling screen and along the way you encounter minefields, bunkers and such apart from the soldiers. You can take out the bunkers with rockets or plastic explosives but the best way to go about is to sneak around. You can crawl in trenches to evade enemy soldiers and stay out of shooting range from the bunkers. You’ll have to run along the entire length of the field collecting your equipment if neccesary and finally reaching your goal. All this has to be done within a time limit so if you reach the checkpoint too late you will be left on the field of battle with no way out.
Airborne ranger is an excellent game and though it is mostly an action game you’ll have to rely a lot on stealth to get past some points. This combined with the fact that you can select your own equipment to fit your playing style is excellent. This game is a classic and it’s real fun to play to this day so I recommend you check it out fast.

This game was released for several different systems here are some notes:
C64 | Released in 1987. Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 v2.0 win. This version contains a load of trainer if you want to use them. The game itself is pretty much the same as the DOS version. There is a second disk included which holds the savegames, the game asks for the disk but does not ask you to return the gamedisk which will lock up the game so remember to change the disk before you start a mission. |
