- Superhero league of Hoboken -

Superhero league of Hoboken is a game from Legend entertainment that incorperates both adventure and RPG elements. The game is set two centuries after a nuclear war has devastated the world, mankind has survived among the toxic and polluted earth but many dangers now exists. Among all this there is hope in the superhero leagues that have popped up around the world. You are the Crimson Tape and with your extraordinary power to create orginazational charts you are the leader of the superhero league of Hoboken. This league is very new and thus it is way down below on the chart of excellent superhero leagues. Your job is to help mankind and make the world a better place and thus doing so increasing your rankings which will help you gain prestige and attract new superheroes to join you.

You start with a band of five superheroes all of whom have a superpower, these can be divided into combat powers or miscellaneos powers. You can have combat power like raising an opponents cholesterol which is used when you encounter mutated nasties and other weird foes. The other powers are used for helping you solve the many puzzles the game has and they include seeing into pizza boxes without opening them and eating spice foods without distress. It's important to choose the right party because you are limited to four party members at the start but when your rank increases you will be able to have more. The adventureing part of the game is played in classic legend game style with a point and click interface and a first persion view.

When moving between places you are on an overhead map of the city which is blacked out at first and you will have to explore to find out where any interesting places are. While in this mode you can be attacked randomly by enemies which will bring you to the battle screen. All the enemies are shown in a bar at the top of the screen and the ones closest to you are in full view. You can use either a melee attack or a ranged attack as you can only have two people standing in the front line. Battle is played out in turns and whichever party has the suprise can attack first. If you win you will gain experience and usually money and/or items but if any of your party get hurt you need to rest to regain strength but you cannot rest on the overhead map so you'll have to go to a village. Resting will take up food so you can only rest a couple of times in the field before you have to get some more from your base. You can make things easier for yourself by fighting a lot of random battles and after a set amount the area will be cleared of random enemies but you'll still have to fight plotbased battles though. You advance the plot of the game by completing missions that the computer at your home base gives you and the ultimate goal is to stop Dr. Entropy from trying to end the human civilization.

This game uses the engine used for many other legend adventure games like companions of Xanth but with the RPG elements involving quite a substantial part of the game I have decided to list it under the RPG sections. The graphics and sound are excellent and the enemies are all weird and wacky. It's a shame that there are occasions when missing an item will stop you from completing the game but otherwise the game is very enjoyable. Some gamers don't like the merging of different types of games but this one pulls it off quite well so I can recommend this game especially those who like other legend games as well.

Overal rating: 8/10
