- Gyruss -

One of the earliest shoot'em ups are space invaders and galaxian, waves of aliens would fall down the screen and you had to take them out before they overwhelmed you. Gyruss is different in that it gives you the ability to move in a 360 degrees circle instead of only left and right. You are always faced towards the middle of the screen and enemies will come at you from a distance and move towards you. At the start you will only face simple ships that try to kill you by ramming or shooting but later you will encounter ships that fire back and some that carry weapons between them making it necessary for you to evade them alltogether. Each level consists of a certain number of ships that need to be destoyed and if you complete it you will get a step close to the planet you are flying to.

You are actually flying from outside our solar system towards earth and each planet requires you to finish a couple of levels. You can get a powerup in the form of a doubleshot that occasionally appears. On the NES version you can also get a missile that will destroy anything in it's (straight) path and you will also have to face many different enemies and end-of-level bosses as well. The graphics aren't really much because the background consists only of start moving towards you but it does have a really catchy soundtrack that constantly plays in the background. The movement of the ship can be difficult at first because you need to turn in a circle and it's likely you'll die a couple of times because of this but you'll soon get the hang of it.

I used to play this game a lot when I got my first computer and I have some fond memories of it, I especially remember my friends making some comments towards me after I spent 12 hours glued behind the screen :) . Anyway these days the game seems rather limited but it's easy to pick up for a quick blast and compared to similar games of that time it isn't half bad. The NES version which has more enemies, powerups and bosses is definately the best version so I recommend you check that one out.

Overal rating: 7/10

This game was released for several different systems here are some notes:
Atari 2600 Released in 1984.
Game has been tested but not completed with Stella v1.4.1.
The enemies and the entire screen flash constantly which is rather annoying.
C64 Released in 1984.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 v2.0 win.
The version I played the most, this has the best soundtrack in my opinion.
Colecovision Released in 1984.
Game has been tested but not completed with KOLEKO v1.31.
The seperate rom is not availablle but it is included in the KOLEKO emulator which is available from the UTILS section. This is about the same as the c64 version but for some reason it's more difficult to hit the enemies.
NES Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed with FCE ultra v0.98.12.
Released later than the others and the improvements are for the better.
Others These versions are not available.
The game was originally released in the arcades in 1983 by Konami.
Atari 5200 released in 1984.
