Escape from Colditz is based
on a board game by Gibson but since I have never played it I can't really
tell in what way the game differs. You control four pow's (prisoner of war)
who are imprisoned in a Nazi prison and you must try to escape. Each of
the four prisoners has a different nationality (English, American, French
and Polish) and this allows you to visit different parts of the building
without arousing suspicion from the guards. That means that if one of your
guys is thrown in solitary or even killed it will make the game harder if
not impossible to complete.
You'll have to find lockpicks and keys to open doors that are locked. Most
of the time this means that you open the less secure doors with easy to
find lockpicks and the rooms behind them will often reveal keys that lead
to more secure areas containing other items like guard uniforms and shovels.
This sounds easier than it really is because not only are the hallways laid
out like a maze but there are guards patrolling the building as well and
if you get caught all of your items will be confiscated and you'll be thrown
in solitary for a while so you can't move. You can't take out the guards
so the only option is to remain stealthty or as a last resort run like crazy
and hope they'll lose you.
The game uses a isometric view and you can control one of the prisoners
at a time using the F1-F4 buttons or you can view them all at once with
the F5 button. You can alternate between walking and running with the space
bar and when walking you casually put your hands in your pockets, you can
almost hear the guy whistling :) Picking up and dropping items is done with
the up/down arrow keys and the left/right arrows switch between items. The
graphics and sound are nothing spectacular and most of the rooms look exactly
alike with only basic doors and bland walls, remember you are a prisoner
though so the building is supposed to look like that. This actually makes
the game even more difficult so I suggest you make a map of the place so
you won't get lost. I played this game plenty of times before and I was
never really able to get very far because you're supposed to be stealthty
and not run around collecting stuff as fast as possible which will get you
killed or captured in no time. Still I kept coming back for more so the
game does have it's attractions and if you fancy escaping from prison you
can give this game a try.
