- Eidolon, the -

I had not heard of The Eidolon until I came across it when searching through my collection of old games. It's actually a first person shooter in which you must navigate through a maze where you have to find four different colored gems after which you must defeat the dragon guarding the exit so you can advance. Along the way you will find weird creatures that will try to stop you like a rotorfly, a flylike beast with a helicoptor-rotor instead of wings! Each level will get bigger and thus harder to navigate.

The eidolon is actually the name of a device that was invented long ago and it is a device that can travel by the power of mind alone. You find this device long after it was abandoned but once you step in you are transported into a dark cave. This is where your journey begins and you must find a way to get out of the caves. The basic gameplay revolves around finding the four gems that will allow you to leave the current level, usually they are attached to the ceiling somewhere in the cave and when you collect them they will light up in your main status bar. You also have four different kinds of fireballs available to you with which you can destroy any monsters you come across. The fireballs have different attacks such as the yellow one which can freeze monsters but the main weapon is the red one. Once you find all the gems you have to find the big dragon guarding the exit and if you are able to destroy him then you can advance to the next level and one step closer to freedom.

Graphically the game is quite amazing as it uses fractal generated graphics to show a 3D screen and it looks great for a game that is 20 years old. The fractal engine was used by Lucasfilm before in two games, Rescue on Fractalis and Kronos rift. It has to be said though that it isn't the fastmoving FPS people are used to these days and when there is more than one passage visable the movement becomes very choppy. It's a bit too slowpaced for my taste but it's worth having a look even if it was only for the graphics.

Overal rating: 7/10
