- Nuclear war -

Despite the looks of the intro picture and the name, this game is actually a light hearted strategy game in which you much wage nuclear war againt four other nations. You instantly know the game doesn't take itself very seriously when you see the intro where a bomber flies over a city and drops a nuke with a cowboy riding it to it's destination. You are the president of a country surrounded by four other nuclear powers and you must defeat them in order to win. You can select from a host of different opponents like Gorbachef, Ghanji and Ronny Raygun all of which are obviously based on some real people. They actually remind me a lot of that show called spitting image where many famous people were depicted in a similar way.

The game is played in a turnbased manner and most options presented to you have something to do with nukes. You can build weapons, ready a missile or bomber, set up protection and ofcourse launch a nuke. The missiles and warheads range from 10 to 100 Megatons in power and whenever a 100 Megaton warhead is build your citizens gasp out in amazement. The missiles are single use weapons but the two bombers available can carry a number of warheads until they reach their maximum of either 50 or 100 Megatons. There are actually two options that don't directly involve weapons and that is propaganda which sometimes causes citizens from the targetted city to defect to your country. The other option is diplomacy depicted by a smiley icon indicating your policy towards that country, eventually you will have to battle it out anyway because this world isn't big enough for two nuclear powers.

Nuclear war is a rather short but fun strategy game. It doesn't really stand out in any way as far as graphics or depth are concerned but it does offer a quick game of nuclear war without making you feel bad about it. It's still fun to play after all this time and if you'd care to give a shot at waging a nuclear war I can definately recommend this game.

This game was released for two different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
This version has an intro that's not in the DOS version but the rest of the game is exactly the same.
DOS Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS PC.
Some animations run too fast on anything higher than a 386 pc but it doesn't make the game unplayable, you might miss some of the jokes because of this though.
