- Manhunter: New York -

If you think of Sierra online what type of game would you think of? Adventures of course and a few names that come to mind are probably King's quest, Space quest or Leisure suit Larry. But have you ever hear of Manhunter: New York? A point and click adventure featuring a dystopian future where a race of aliens that look like eyeballs have taken over earth. Extreme laws have been implemented like the only clothes allowed are brown robes and even talking is a crime! You play a manhunter whose job it is to hunt down criminals and the game starts when you get an assignment from one of the aliens to investigate a hospital bombing.

You use a computer called MAD with which you can track any suspects movements, this is shown on an overhead map and will often give you clues where to go and what to do when you get there so watch carefully. After viewing the film you can travel around New York but only when you reach a point of interested, shown as a blinking spot, will it zoom in and you can investigate further. The view will switch to a first person view and you can use the cursor to move around the screen. If move across items or exits you can use them. Once you start tracking the suspect you will eventually find clues, items or places of later interest. If you have completed a set amount of tasks the day will end and your alien bosses will ask for a name of a suspect which you need to give them. Later on you will find out more about the plot, a serial killer and a resistance group trying to stop the eyeballs.

Part of the game involves puzzles and you will need to find items or get to certain places. Even though each person has a tracking device they do not work all the time especially in crowded places or in sheltered buildings. Sometimes you will need to do an arcade sequence which are extremely varied, one has you throwing knives between a bartenders fingers and another has you trying to get past a couple of thugs in a back alley.
This game also has that one thing I absolutely dispise in adventure games which is a maze, several actually. The one good thing about them is that inside the manual as well as the game there are maps you can figure out to make them easy though still quite annoying.

I've seen some reviews of Manhunter New York that seriously beat it down into the ground and yes I must admit it has it's faults. Mazes, a very thin plot and some of the arcade sequences are extremely annoying and not really related to anything other than slowing your progress. I'm not going to complain about the graphics like some do because seriously how many games of that era have very GOOD graphics?
There are some good points though like the dystopian setting, the first ever point and click interface for a Sierra game and the more mature content instead of fairies and comedy of other Sierra adventures. Actually this game has a lot in common with Rise of the Dragon, another Sierra (actually Dynamix) adventure game, I see Manhunter as a parent of that game actually. There was actually a sequel made called Manhunter: San Fransisco and I've never played that yet but I bet I will soon after playing this one.
It's not the greatest adventure ever but I though it was worth the effort.

Overal rating: 7/10

This game was released for several different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1988.
Like all Sierra conversions this has nicer sounds and music, equal graphics and bad loading times.
Atari ST Released in 1988.
Slightly faster loading times but overall pretty much the same as the amiga version.
DOS Released in 1988.
I prefer this dispite the bad pc speaker music because of the speedy loading times.
Others This version is not available.
Apple released in 1988.
