- Montezuma's revenge -

Platform games were some of the earliest type of game released apart from the early text adventures and other simple games and they survive to this day. Montezuma's revenge puts you in the shoes of adventurer and treasure hunter Panama Joe and this time he's after the treasure of Montezuma hidden away deep inside his temple. The temple is filled with dangers such as snakes and animated skulls but also fires, disappearing platforms and deadly falls. Get to the final treasure chamber and you will have a chance to get at Montezuma's treasure!

You start the game by selecting the difficulty level but this game is hard enough as it is so beginners should select number one. Then you are dropped into the catatombs and the only way out is through the treasure chamber. You will immediately notice that you will have to run and jump across the halls in order to get anywhere, your most immediate need will be the colored keys scattered around the place as these will open doors leading to other areas. Other items you can pick up are weapons with which you can disable monsters and ofcourse treasure, you can only hold 5 items at once so make sure you don't carry too much or you cannot pick up the treasure.

Panama Joe is an adventurer yes but he isn't much in the way of a fighter, he can only run around, jump and climb ladders. Death is around every corner for Panama Joe though as merely touching a monster will kill him, the only good thing about this is that once you do the enemy will also disappear but you will lose a life. Other dangers are the fires, high falls and even laserbeams! Each screen has it's own challenge but they all interlock masterfully in order for you to pick up the items you need and get through to the next area. Once you actually get to the treasure chamber the game will allow you to swing around on vines collecting as much treasure as you can within a timelimit, if you drop off a rope or the time runs out you are taken to the beginning but on a higher difficulty level.

Montezuma's revenge is an incredibly simple game at it's heart but it's very fun and challenging to play. There is something very satisfactory about getting to the next area because the game requires you to do some pixelperfect jumping and running across timed platforms while dodging all those monsters. The fact that Panama Joe can't fight at all doesn't detract anything from gameplay and it allows you to concentrate on the platforming. Released in 1983 I think Montezuma's Revenge has stood the test of time very well and is well worth playing even today.

This game was released for many different systems here are some notes:
Atari 2600 Released in 1983.
Because the Atari 2600 is so low on capabilities this looks different from the other versions, gameplay is pretty much all there though.
C64 Released in 1984.
This has a load of trainers if you want.
Colecovision Released in 1984.
This is one of my favorite systems as the quality of the games is often just a bit higher than the rest and it's no different this time.
DOS Released in 1984.
There are control issues both in dosbox and on a real machine, I got around it in dosbox by selecting to use a joystick instead of the keyboard.
This version isn't very good anyway as everything seems to have the same color so you're better off with another version.
SMS - Sega
Master system
Released in 1989.
Released much later than the others this has updated graphics and music/sounds, gameplay wise it hasn't changed though and it doesn't need them.
Others These versions are not available.
Apple released in 1984.
Atari 8-bit released in 1984.
