- Labyrinth -

Labyrinth was a fantasy movie released in 1986 in which Jareth the goblin king kidnaps the little brother of Sarah Williams. She must then go into the Labyrinth, a huge maze, to find and rescue her brother. The game doesn't have the exact plot but instead you are cast as a regular guy who goes into a theater one day and when watching the movie Jareth will come out and tells you he has been watching you for a long time. Without further ado he transports you to the Labyrinth and the only way to get home is to navigate the entire maze and defeat Jareth.

Surprisingly the game starts as a textadventure and you are simply standing on the road near your house. In order to get to the Labyrinth you will have to get into the theater and watch the movie after which Jareth will appear and transport you. Commands are given using a menu with options like give, take etc. which have to be combined on the right with an object. Once you get to the Labyrinth the same menu is used to give command but you also control a character with the joystick and actually walk around the maze. You'll have to pick up items some of which are required for you to advance to the next part of the maze but some are used much later on so you will have to take care not to go on too fast. Standing in your way are guards who will drop you into traps but most of the time you are stopped by doors or passages which you will have to find out how to pass. Some of the puzzles are quite baffling but very straightforward once you figure them out. An example would be a wall with stone faces in them, insult them an they will talk back and even give hints.

Labyrinth is quite a fun adventure game and the transition from the textbased start to the graphical game is rather unique. Graphically you see the labyrinth from several different perspective but usually it's a thirdperson or otherwise a semi birdseye view. Being a maze it can become somewhat repetitive but there are lots of different areas and most of them aren't too big so you will not spend too long in any one of them. Many of the characters and places from the movie are also incorperated in the game such as the bog of eternal stench, Sir Didymus and the big but friendly Ludo. It doesn't follow the movie completely but that doesn't matter at all for the game, it does however have a timelimit of 13 hours apparently after which you are stuck in the labyrinth forever. I doubt you will need that much time to finish the game but it's not the longest there is either. If there are any letdowns it's the fact that it's quite easy to forget an item in the early parts of the game which will stop you from finishing the game, an example is the camcorder in your house at the beginning part of the game. Other than that this is one adventure game where a maze doesn't detract from gameplay and even add to it. Recommend stuff this!

This game was released for several different systems here are some notes:
Apple Released in 1986.
I'm pretty sure the weird colors are because of the emulator but otherwise this doesn't differ much from the C64 version.
C64 Released in 1986.
The game needs to write information to the disk so make sure you set this correctly in your emulator or it might not work properly.
