- Sensible soccer -

At the time of writing this review the world cup soccer in South Africa is almost at an end with only the finals and runnerup match scheduled so why not play a soccer game I though.
At the time of release of sensible soccer THE soccer game to beat was kick off 2, the prequel of which pretty much revolutionized the genre by not letting the ball stick to the players but constantly bouncing it around like for real. Sensible soccer takes kick off as a huge inspiration but tries to do things differently while still making for an interesting soccer game.

Football, or soccer if you're from the US, is a game played on a field with 11 players on each side. The goal is to simply kick the ball in the goal of the other team scoring a point, after two halves consisting of 45 minutes each the game is over unless it's a special game where they play another 30 minutes and then the dreaded shootout if the score is still tied.

Sensible soccer has many teams from most of the famous countries playing the game and many others you can customize the way you want. All of the teams can be computer or player controlled and individual players and teams are actually different from one another so you might even have favorite one after getting to know them.
Like other games in it's genre it's viewed from a topdown view which makes for very small player characters but the plus side it that it gives you a larger view of the field. Also the ball also sticks to players feet but not as much as in other games, if you make a sudden turn of directional change don't expect the ball to follow you. That means an important part of the game (which is also true in real life) is knowing how, when and where to pass the ball.

The game is definately not as frantic as kick off but it does offer a much lower playing curve for less fanatic gamers, that doesn't mean it's easy by any means because when you get to the higher levels it can still be quite a challenge. Sensible soccer was quite a success because it spawned many sequels which offered things like cups and teams from all over the world as well as managing functions. This is only the first game though so don't expect all of that but it's still pretty worthwhile if you like soccer games.

Overal rating: 7/10

This game was released for several different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1992.
Doesn't support a second diskdrive so swap the disk when the game asks. The best version in my opinion, though the ST is almost the same
Atari ST Released in 1992.
This is version 1.1 but otherwise it's pretty much the same as the amiga one.
Super NES Released in 1993.
The screen is smaller so you can't as much of the field as the others.
Sega CD Released in 1994.
This has fancy intro's at the beginning of the game and matches but it doesn't really add that much to the game which is pretty much like the other versions.
