- Universal warrior -

During the C64 years there were loads of game designers and coders who made a game with only two or so people. When the amiga came round this had lessened quite a bit but they were still around and universal warrior is one of those games. There is no real story behind the game just use your droid to go into the level and make it through while making as much money as you can.

You play the game from an overhead view much like gauntlet and the levels consist of mazes filled with enemies and obstacles that you need to overcome. Some will need you to collect a key to open a door but others will have you puzzling as you can only reach some areas by finding out a specific route over walls and such. Throughout the entire level you can find cash which is your main object but you can also save money by taking care of your droid and not damage it as much. Between levels you will have the chance to upgrade your droid with armor, weapons and other equipment. To make some more money you can even place bets on your next run on things like stage completed in x amount or weapon hit rate. Another novelty is the ability to insure your droid on various parts which apparently hasn't been done in any other game before or after this one.

I love games in which you can make money and buy new things with that because it's gives you something to aim for. The fact that you can bet on yourself means you can have an effect on the results which is always nice hehe. At the time of release a lot of magazines praised the graphics but being an overhead view and small sprites it doesn't look like too much really. Still the game is quite enjoyable and if you fancy a bit of action and puzzling then this is definately worth a try.
