- Space Quest: the Sarien encounter -

Space Quest was one of the signature adventure series from Sierra and this is where it all started. You play the part of Roger Wilco, a janitor on board the starship arcada. While you were dozing in the closet while on the job the entire crew is killed by the Sariens and they have stolen a valuable item. Since you are the only one that's left it's up to you to get it back and get revenge on the Sariens.

The game starts directly after you wake up and realize just what's happened but first things first as the ship is about to explode and you have only minutes to get out. There are still Sarien patrols around the ship and you'll have to avoid them by standing in corners or in rooms. The time limit for the selfdestruct happens in realtime so you'll really only have minutes to get out, too slow and it's hasta la vista baby. Once you escape from the ship your journey has only begun though as you'll have to chase the Sariens across the galaxy and you will have to face plenty of dangers on weird and wonderfull planets as well.

The interface is your standard Sierra AGI interpreter where you type in commands but you can control Roger with the mouse of using the arrow keys. The graphics are in 16 color ega and the characters can look rather pixellated but hey this game is 25 years old now. Some of the backgrounds are quite nice to look at though. Since the PC was the main release platform for adventure games and at the time soundcards were not really standard at all so there very little sounds and music if at all.

The one things that the space quest series stand out with compared to other series is the humor and even the death scenes show a little funny animation though I doubt that you'll find it very funny after the umpteenth time. The game doesn't take itself too seriously and there are plenty of references to star trek and star wars as well. If you like sierra adventures or adventure games in general you can't go wrong with this game and the entire series.

Overal rating: 8/10
