- X-15 Alpha mission -

Some games go down in history even though they aren't really special but some games though they are fun to play and worthy of remembering. X-15 alpha mission fall in the latter category, it is special because there are many different gameplay styles in the game and though none of the levels are very long it was quite uncommon to have such a variety in gameplay in most games. The backstory tells of a terrorist group who have taken over a fully armed orbital space station and the potential for destruction is enormous. Tthe ransom demands are outrageous so you are being send in the X-15 craft capable of reaching the station in orbit after which you can deploy remote control robots to infiltrate and terminate the terrorists.

The game starts off like a flight sim in which you must pilot your craft through three heights, the lower atmosphere where you will face helicopters and missiles, the upper atmosphere where aircraft will come after you and space where sattelites will try to stop you. All enemy craft can fire at you and you will have to avoid their shots but take care not to evade too much or you will not have enough fuel to fly to the spacestation. You will have to take the most direct route to the station while avoiding or destroying all the enemies with you gun. Once you reach the spacestation you must enter the security code and you can deploy the remote control robots which you will have to fly onto the station. This is another action sequence and you control the movement of the craft but make sure to fire your boosters or you will crash. On the surface the game once again switches to another sequence where you control two different robots and have to blow up certain area's of the station while avoiding a lot of patrolling craft and obstacles.

Though the game's different subgames aren't spectacular they are fun and short enough that you don't get bored with them while trying to get to the next. The difficulty lies in the fact that you can only make a limited number of mistakes in each area before the damage is too great and you fail your mission. If you fail you'll have to do the entire thing from the beginning again so take care. I can give you one tip and that is to read your mission briefing and remember the security code, I made the mistake and had to do the whole thing over again. I had quite a good time with the game and if you can get past the looks you might also.

Overal rating: 7.5/10
