- Another world -

Another world aka out of this world was an incredible game when it was released because of it's graphics. Normally games would have fixed sprites that an artist had to draw frame by frame but in this game everthing consists of polygons that are moved in realtime by the computer. This allowed for great graphics and cutscenes without the need for a huge amount of storage.

The game is an action/platform game with some puzzles and adventuring mixed in. The intro shows you, a scientist, performing an experiment with a particle accelerator on a stormy night. Unfortunately a lightning bolt hits the accelerator and it warps you to another world where your adventure begins. The planet you are now on is extremely hostile as you find out when you are transported into water and tentacles come up to grab you. From here on you'll have to face deadly slugs, a beast and bounty hunters all on the first level. You are not entirely helpless but having no weapons the best you can do is kick, run and jump. The slugs are easily taken care of but the beast will not stop chasing you the bounty hunters get rid of it but too bad they will take you hostage as well. On later levels the objects is to escape your prison with the help from an alien friend through levels of enemies, underwater corridors and what more.

Luckily you won't be helpless for long as a gun from a guard will give you some offensive power, the gun can be used to fire normal shots, put up a forcefield or fire a huge blast by pressing or holding down the firebutton. You'll have to figure out some puzzles as well, which unfortunately pretty much have only one solution to them. A lot of the games difficulty is based on instant deaths as pretty much any mistake you make will lead to a quick death, you can start the level over as often as you like but sometimes getting far and then having to do it all over again can be annoying. Some of the levels are very short but most are fairly long, usually it pays to take it slow and think a bit even when in combat because your gun has a limited energy supply.

Altough the game can be very annoying at times because of the difficulty level and instant deaths it really doesn't let you go and you just have to try again to finish the level. The pace is very high because as soon as you start the game you'll get attacked from all sides and you have to move fast to survive. The graphics have a rough edge to them and don't contain a lot of detail but the movement and cinematics are great. It's all the more amazing when you realize that the game was pretty much made by one man, with another doing only the music! If you're looking for a challenge or simply a great game then you have to get this game.

Overal rating: 9/10
