- New Zealand story, the -

Platform games were the stable of games back in the 80's and 90's and to get away from the masses you'd have to do something pretty different. The New Zealand story starts with some kiwi's happily playing outside the zoo but suddenly Wally the Walrus comes in and takes them all away so he can sell them. One of the kiwi's called Tiki escaped and now he has to face a dangerous journey to free all of his friends and to face the evil Wally. Who thinks of this stuff!?

Being a kiwi, a flightless bird, Tiki is forced to jump his way through most of the levels to get to his friends but occasionally he can knock an enemy off of their flying mounts which can range from clouds to birds and balloons. This will give you access to higher parts of the levels but you cannot travel through most platforms which you can do when you are walking. The odds are heavily against you but you are not totally helpless, you have a bow and arrow which will take out most enemies but some enemies drop weapons like bombs and even lasers which will help you out.

The levels are constructed like mazes and altough they follow a set path you can often choose wether to fly or jump to certain places whichever you prefer. At the end of a level is one of your friends caged but at the end of each area there will be a large foe waiting for you. You will have to defeat the boss before you can go to the next area until you come to the evil Wally the Walrus himself. The levels themselves have a timelimit and if you don't rescue your friend in time a devil will come and try to take you out. The graphics are very simply and what most people would refer to as cute, the main character looks like a little chick all yellow and all.

Altough the characters in the game are pretty bizarre, I doubt many people will even know what a kiwi is (a flightless bird that only lives in New Zealand) this won't change much for the game though. The action is fast and the levels are short enough that they don't drag on while they occasionally introduce new things like swimming and such. The time limit can be annoying but they put in an extra factor to not tarry around and the margins aren't that small to be impossible to overcome. As far as platform games go this is one of the better ones so give it a go.

This game was released for many different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1989.
Probably the best of the home versions, crisp graphics and good controls.
Amstrad CPC Released in 1989.
This is an unplayable mess, the screen flickers, there's no backgrounds at all. Leave this alone I would say.
C64 Released in 1989.
Remarkably good conversion and apart from some minor graphic downtowning it's al there.
Released in 1989.
This is very similar to the PCE version.
NES Released in 1989.
The music is very sped up but otherwise it's pretty good.
Turbo Grafx
Released in 1989.
Probably the best of them all, this is also the only version which tells the story in the beginning.
SMS - Sega
Master system
Released in 1989.
Like the NES version the music is really fast but otherwise it's great.
ZX Spectrum Released in 1989.
Slighty better than the Amstrad version but still the screen flickers a lot and non existant backgrounds.
