- Mayhem in monsterland -

Back in the early days of the Commodore 64 games were pretty much limited to pure action games. Later on developers were more adventurous and created all types of games but the action genre was still pretty popular. Mayhem in monsterland was released at the end of the C64's lifespan and it's a fairly standard platform game but with a little twist.

You play the part of a small dragon and your job is to restore the land back to it's natural self after it has been changed to a drab and unhappy state. The task is accomplished by stomping on enemies which sometimes drop magic, collect enough of these and deliver them to the head dragon and he can change the land back. Afterwards you can once again play the level but this time you can collect stars which are scattered around the level and once you do you can find the exit and complete the level.

The idea of the changing levels isn't unique but it's implemented quite well, the sad type levels have a very grim coloring up to the point of being almost grey and the happy type are very colorfull. This is quite a good use of levels since this basically doubles each level without too much hassle. There is the matter of variation as the levels don't really bring much new and the main problem is trying to get into various spots where the magic and stars are hidden. This is a common 'problem' with older games though and the execution is done well enough that you can pick this game up for a quick go.

Overal rating: 7/10
