- KGB -

KGB, a.k.a. conspiracy is a game about the corruption within the KGB. You are Maksim Rukov, a soviet officer who has just been transferred to department P after your parent have been assasinated. The events of the game take place when Mikhail Gorbachev was still the president of the (now former) U.S.S.R just before it's fall. Department P and therefore your duty is to find and take care of the corrupt KGB members.

Your first task is to investigate a murder or death of a private detective. Being part of the KGB ofcourse gives you some measure of power once you've established yourself as such so you can search the man's without much problems. This also concerns questioning people the first of which is the dead man's wife, it's a nasty business but it is your job. Questioning people is done through a multiple choice menu and it will show a closeup of the person your are talking with. You can choose to be polite or aggresive but you should always try to get as much information as you can so be carefull what you say and do. Soon though the clues to this death point to a far greater conspiracy involving snuff videos and the people involved are among the most important people in the country.

The graphics remind me a lot about dune, another cryo game, and it uses the same basic interface. You view the game from a first person and you can click on items and people to interact with them. A closeup of a person's face is shown when you talk to them and occasionally they will show emotions when you talk to them in a certain way which is a nice feature. As far as sound there are no effects at all in the game but there are a couple of nice soundtracks throughout the game.

Cryo made a lot of similar games and I really like them so I might be biased towards this one as well. The others were mostly fantasy though so it is somewhat of a departure. Being a KGB agent also entails you to do some nasty stuff like taking out people in your way and stuffing them inside a dumpster to get rid of them, not exactly PG but it would not surprise me if it had happened in real life. That said the game is quite hard because there are simply very little clues as what to do to continue and there are times you have to be in a certain place at a certain time because the clock keeps on ticking in this game. If you're looking for a challenging adventure game then this is the one for you.

Note: There are some events in the game that would disturb some people, nothing really graphical but mostly in the descriptions so take that into account.

Overal rating: 8.5/10

This game was released for two systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1992.
Though in effect this is the same as the DOS version the hardware limitations slow the game down with really long loading times and disk-swapping so you're better off with the original.
DOS Released in 1992.
This is the original floppy version but is was also released on CD which had Donald Sutherland playing as your deceased father who gave you clues. The CD had no full speech sadly.
