- Ikari warriors -

Ikari warriors is a game that reminded me a lot about commando, a game in which you had to blast through hordes of enemies by yourself. This game sports some changes and improvements the most obvious of which is that there is a two-player simultanious mode which greatly increases the fun you can have with the game. Another is that there are no levels like in most games but instead the entire game consists of one giant level.

Like most arcade games the story is as thin as a piece of paper, you and your partner are send in to rescue a captured general but crashland in the jungle so you have to fight your way through. You start the game with a simple blaster and a couple of grenades but unlike most other shooters your gun doesn't have infinite ammo so don't waste it. You can get more ammo and grenades which are lying around or dropped by some enemies but the best thing is that occasionally you can find a tank lying around and you can get in it! Obviously this will greatly increase your firepower but there is a limit to how far you can drive it, probably you run out of gas or you lose all your energy. While in a tank you cannot go into the water however so some areas cannot be crosses unless you go on foot.

Ikari warriors is pretty fun especially when played with a another person. The addition of the driveable tank and the single level layout of the game was pretty unique at the time. The translation to the home systems was generally well done but it did lose something, the controls in the arcade were such that you could fire in any direction while walking in another. Most versions here have simplified controls and you shoot in the direction you walk but this doesn't take away too much from the gameplay. If you're looking for a fun shooter then check this game out.

This game was released for many different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1988.
This is the closes version (graphically) to the arcade.
Amstrad CPC Released in 1987.
The playing field is a bit squashed but otherwise it's ok.
Atari 2600 Released in 1989.
This is a somewhat limited version given system power, the graphics are bad and there is no two-player option.
Atari 7800 Released in 1989.
The characters look weird in this version.
C64 Released in 1986.
This is one of the better versions, it also has a load of trainers.
NES Released in 1987.
The NES was well suited for these types of games and this is most likely the best home version.
ZX Spectrum Released in 1990.
The monochroom graphics sometimes make it hard to see properly.
Others These versions are not available.
Atari ST released in 1988.
MSX released in 1987.
MS-DOS released in 1987.
