- Forest of Doom -

Forest of doom is an RPG but it's different from most others, sure it has statistics, fantasy creatures and dice rolling but the difference is how the story plays out. You play the part of a lone swordsman for hire and now you've gone to the northen lands to seek adventure. Days pass without a single person in your path until one night an injured dwarf comes by you campsite. With his dying breath he tells you of his mission to find the sacred runes that will protect his village from the trolls and he asks you to take his gold and complete his mission for him for which you will be well rewarded. After burying the dwarf you decide that you will do as he had asked and go into Darkwood forest to find the runes and bring them back.

When you start the game and you've created a character you play with the game presents itself. The entire game is played out from a book and in between the storytelling you will be presented with options about what you want to do. Depending on your choice the story will continue or you might be able to do combat or buy some new gear with your hold. Some choices will might help you indirectly in your quest like paying a crow for advice on where to go next but other times you can decide wether or not to be heroic and take on those monsters that stand in your way. Combat is very simple and is done by throwing dice, combined with your skill and any equipment that you have you will get a certain score. The enemy goes through exactly the same process and whoever has the higher score will be able to land a blow. This will go on until one person no longer has any hitpoints or if you are able to escape. Occasionally you will be presented with a more elaborate menu where you can buy items and such but these usually only occur at friendly places. Not all choices you get lead to a good path because you can often select to attack people that might be able to help you but it's up to you what to do.

Forest of doom is quite an interesting RPG, the storytelling plays a large part in the game obviously and the combat is simplified compared to others. However this does mean the game is very linear as you are extremely limited in the actions you can take. Not all actions will lead straight to a bad ending though so there is some replay value. The progress is very slow though mainly because the letters being written in the book are done so slowly but luckily you can speed up most emulators to a more acceptable level. If you can cope with the pace of the game it can be quite interesting.

Overal rating: 7/10

This game was released for two different systems here are some notes:
C64 Released in 1984.
After combat you must press Q to continue to the story, the game will not continue by itself.
ZX Spectrum Released in 1984.
I was reluctant to put this game up because after combat it seems to get stuck however the C64 appears to have the same problems but the Q button does not seem to work on this version. The rest of the game works fine so it might just be a case of finding the right button.
