- Flasch Bier -

The creators of boulderdash really had a great idea on their hands as the formula has been copied to countless other games including this one. Flasch bier, meaning bottle of beer in German, is a game in which you play a character who is apparently highly addicted to beer as you will do anything to get a bottle of it. Standing between you and your beer are mazes, traps and more but you must overcome them if you are to get your satisfaction.

Gameplay is very similar to boulderdash as you walk around mazes which are mostly filled with sand and rocks. The sand will move when you walk through it and if you do it right the boulders on top of them will fall down so you can pass to the next area. This is easier said than done though as a lot of the time there is only one way to get past certain rocks and you'll have to figure out how to do it. Sometimes you must even do some splitsecond timing moves because you have to remove the sand from underneath boulders and quickly step aside before they crush you. Unfortunately when you are crushed or whenever you lose a life the level is reset and you are send back to the beginning which can lead to extreme frustration at times. If you do manage to get past all obstacles you can finally have a cold drink and when you are finished you can go to the next level to try you luck once more.

I like boulderdash games and I've seen plenty of them throughout the years but this has got to be one of the most difficult. Don't expect any mercy as the first level is hard enough to take all your remaining lives before you even get the first bottle of beer. The fact that the level resets after you die can be quite frustrating especially when you are near the end. I can't recommend the game to everyone because of the difficulty level but those looking for a challenge will have their hands full with this one.

Overal rating: 7/10

This game was released for two different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1988.
The first level here is a weird one with tons of police officers walking in a circle to stop you from getting the beer but after that it gets more traditional.
C64 Released in 1988.
There's only one thing I have to say: good luck.
