- Rampart -

Rampart is a strategy game in which you must build your castle and fend off attacks from enemy boats and castles. The game is played out in a number of different phases. At the start of a level you must choose a home castle and when you do a wall will be build around it. Then you have to place cannons inside the walls of your castle but remember to place them in a proper way so that you can add extra canons later. When battle starts you must attack enemy boats in single player mode or attack other castles in multiplayer mode. The boats can move in different directions and speeds so you must time your attacks so that they will hit when the canon rounds finally reach their targets. Hitting others castles is far easier since they are stationary targets and you only have to destroy the walls. In the final phase you can rebuild your castle with blocks you are given to close any gaps in the walls. If you are fast you can build the wall to encompass another nearby castle and you will be given extra cannons. Make sure all your canons are closed in by walls or you will not be able to use them and even worse if not at least one castle is enclosed you will lose immediately.
When you are done you will start the attacking phase again until you destroy all enemies at which point you win or if you are unable to repair your castle you lose.
Laters levels mean you have to take out more ships and things become generally more difficult.

Rampart is great fun to play especially when playing with other human players. The DOS and C64 version have a three-player option whereas the others only have a maximum of two players. It's not easy either you must time your attacks properly or you won't hit the moving ships with your slowmoving canonballs. Also when repairing your castle the blocks you get won't always be straight so you have to think fast about how to rotate and place them.
All this combined make for a fastpaced puzzle/stategy game that will last for ages especially when joined by a couple of friends.
All versions of the games are great fun but the best has to be the DOS version with good graphics, digitized sound and a three player mode.

Overal rating: 8/10

This game was released for many different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1993.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
Excellent digitized sound, to bad no three player option.
Atari Lynx Released in 1991.
Surprisingly good for a mobile system, it has all the sound effects and gameplay and even some cutscenes not seen in other versions!
Atari ST Released in 1993.
Game has been tested but not completed with Steem v3.2.
The same as the Amiga version except it's a bit slower.
C64 Released in 1992.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 v2.0 win.
I wonder why the C64 is the only other version to have a three-player option.
DOS Released in 1992.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS and Win2k PC.
The best version. The configuration for soundcards is actually in the game instead of a installer like most other games.
Megadrive/
Genesis
Released in 1991.
Game has been tested but not completed with WGens v2.11.
NES Released in 1991.
Game has been tested but not completed with FCE ultra v0.98.12.
Super NES Released in 1991 .
Game has been tested but not completed with ZSNES win v1.36.
SMS - Sega
Master system
Released in 1991.
Game has been tested but not completed with Dega v1.12.
For some reasons the boats don't move smoothly but instead move like they would on a grid, sometimes this makes predicting where they go a bit difficult.
Others These versions were not tested.
Gameboy color released in 1999.
