- Asterix and the magic cauldron -

Asterix and Obelix are two comic book heroes and in case you don't know who they are here's a little explanation. At a time when the Roman army had conquered all but entire Europe there is a small village in Gaul that has stood against them and won. The village is capable of doing this because their druid is able to make a magic potion that gives them superstrength. Asterix is the smartest of the lot and his friend Obelix, who fell in the magic elixir when he was young, the strongest of them all. In this game Asterix and Obelix will have to find the pieces of the cauldron used to make the elixir as it has been broken and scattered among the forest they live in. But you'll have to keep Obelix happy by giving him food once in a while and the Romans running around won't help either.

You start the game in the village and you will control Asterix and walk around looking for the missing pieces. Walking to the edge of the screen will move you to the next spot location and if there is anything interesting you will see it as it will stand out from the background so you can pick it up. Also running around are wild boars which you can kill for food and Roman centurions who would love to take a poke at you. The food is important to keep Obelix happy although it's not entirely clear to me what the use is as he doesn't really do anything except follow you. Whenever you go into combat with a boar or a soldier the screen will show a closeup of you and your enemy and you can fight it out on that screen. Both your and the opponents health is displayed and when the first to lose all energy is the loser. Asterix ofcourse has an ace up his sleeve and if he drinks his magic potion he will be invincible for a short amount of time but you must do this before a fight starts and he has al limited supply so use it carefully. You'll have to explore and fight until you find all the pieces of the cauldron and the village will once again be safe.

There have been plenty of games released starring Asterix and Obelix and most of them have a mainly action based affair. This game is really no different as the collecting of items is no more than walking around and finding the correct screen on which they are, the locations of which can change by the way. However the fighting sequences are a bit of a letdown as they involve very little skill and rely a lot on luck. There is only one punch attack and the range is very small so most of the time you will be hit by an enemy and it's a simple matter of who has the most energy. The game doesn't really stand out in any way so unless you are a total fan of the series I don't think you will get much out of it.

This game was released for three different systems here are some notes:
Amstrad CPC Released in 1985.
Much like the C64 version but it's a bit slower.
C64 Released in 1985.
I believe this is the original version and has the best controls.
ZX Spectrum Released in 1985.
The background graphics are very colorfull but the characters and items are drawn in black only making it hard to see them at times.
