- Wonderboy 3 -

Wonderboy was quite a succesfull platform game that was released by Sega. The first game was a straight scrolling platformer where you control a boy who had to save his island from the evil creatures. The second game had the same basic formula but it was better in pretty much every category by adding equipment that could be improved, secrets and lots of bosses. The third game in the trilogy actually begins at the end of part two where you control the lad in his final stages to defeating the evil dragon. However once you find him in his lair and defeat him you are cursed and turned into a dragon yourself! Now you must quest throughout the land to find all his dragonkin and try to remove this curse so you can be human again. Along the way you will gain the ability to turn into many creatures with different powers that will help you in your quest.

As I said the game begins at the end of part two where you go into the dragon's lair, you have full health, a water flask that is basically a continue and full amor and weapons. You'll have to find a way through the castle and once you do the dragon awaits you. None of these should be much of a problem but afterwards when you are cursed into dragon form your real adventure begins. Having escaped the collapsing castle you come into a nearby village which will become your main base of operations. There are shops you can visit to buy weapons and heal yourself but you can also find doors that will lead to other places. It is here that you must go in order to find a way to change shape. But here is were the game truly excels as when you find another dragon and slay him you will be able to transform into another creature. There are six forms in total including your human form, other are mouseman, piranhaman, lionman, hawkman and mouseman. Each of these has different abilities like the mouseman form will make you very small and allow you to stick to certain walls to reach new areas. The same goes for the other forms and you will have to use each of them to get to the final boss.

The levels themselves are still pretty standard scrolling platform affairs but most are nicely laid out with no real occasions where you are instantly killed. Along the way you will also notice things that you are not able to interact with but will be available once you are in another form so take note of these things. Not all of these paths are needed to complete the game but it shows that the leveldesign is pretty good and gives you the opportunity to vist earlier levels. When you are able to carry swords and amor you can upgrade them in the main village to improve your chances. Also implemented in the town is a save feature that will give you a password so you can start with other forms already available, this is quite handy because the game is very long. Game controls are pretty standard and they are very responsive so no complains there. The graphics are also pretty good for such an old system and there is rarely any slowdown or flickering of sprites.

Wonderboy 3 remains one of my favorite platform games to date with a great mix of action and adventuring. The fact that you can travel (relatively) freely and not in a fixed line is definately a plus from other platform games. The different forms add a lot to the game and you can visit previous levels to unlock all the secrets and there are evens levels that you do not have to play to finish the game but they simple add to an already great game. I like the music especially the one in the beginning where you fight the first dragon, it has stayed with me as long as I know this game. If you are into platform games or are simply looking for a fun action game then this game is definately recommended.

This game was released for three different systems here are some notes:
Turbo Grafx
Released in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with Magic Engine v0.98.
This is called the dragon's curse but otherwise it's the same game. It looks and sounds slightly better but not by much.
SMS - Sega
Master system
Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed with Dega v1.12.
This is the best game ever for the SMS in my opinion!
Others This version is not available.
Game gear released in 1992, this is the exact same as the SMS version.
