- North & South -

North & South is a strategy game based on a French comic book about the American civil war. You can play as either side and must defeat all enemy forces in order to successfully unite the country. The game isn't meant to be hardcore strategy but its main attractions are the minigames that you can play. These are the field battles in which you can control cavalry, soldiers and one cannon. The other two are chase sequences where you have to rob the enemy train and one where you must capture the enemies base.

The main map shows the United (?) States and you start with two troops each. You have to control as many states as possible and if you control all the states that one railroad track goes through you will get money at the end of your turn. Get give bags of gold and you will automatically buy another troop which you can place in a friendly state. There are four railroad tracks that you can control and it's vital that you control some of them so that the money will keep rolling in. You don't have to control all the states to win but you only have to make sure that the enemy no longer has troops at his disposal.
You can finish the game very easily but there are some options on the main screen that can make things more challenging. There are a number of random events you can select which are by default disabled. These are Indians which occasionally attack you, weather that will stop you from moving and a ship that will give the enemy extra troops. The computer can be set on three difficulty levels and at the highest level with all the random events you will have to work for your victory. You can also opt to play a game without all the arcades events but it makes the game a lot less fun to play so it's not recommended.

The graphics are nothing special but they get the job done. There are some nice sound effects though with my favorite being the Indians. Sometimes you can see some random events happening, I once saw a cow being flung from a catapult but I'm unsure what it did or when it happened. All in all the game is fun while it lasts so I suggest you simply set the difficulty higher or otherwise you'll beat the game in no time.

This game was released for five different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1989.
Game has been tested and completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
Very nice with all the animations and sound, this is the original version.
Amstrad CPC Released in 1989.
Looks very good but it plays rather slow.
Atari ST Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed with SainT v1.10.
This is equal to the amiga version.
C64 Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 V2.0 win.
The graphics are very toned down especially the battle screen which shows your soldiers only in black.
DOS Released in 1989.
This looks and plays a lot like the amiga version but the sound is a bit toned down, still excellent though.
NES Released in 1990 by Kemco.
Game has been tested but not completed with FCE ultra 0.98.12.
The map screen can be annoying because you can't click on a state to select troops but you must click on the troop itself. Graphically a bit towned down but not as much as the C64 one.
