- Pacific islands -

Pacific islands is the sequel to Team Yankee, a strategic simulation where you controlled four teams each consisting of four vehicles. Once again the communist Russians are your opponent as this time they have taken control of an island in the pacific and because it is an important strategic point it is emperative that you take it back. You must drive back the enemy in five different areas but always be carefull as the enemy never shows their entire strength all at once.

You start the game with three areas under your control and five under Russian control. Before you can deploy your troops you need to actually buy and outfit them. You can choose from several different vehicles ranging from lightly armored vehicles to the M1 main battle tank which will be your primary weapon against enemy tanks. You also have to buy ammo like shells and smoke grenades and all this has to be done on a budget, yes warfare has become part management in this game as well. The fun thing is that you can also buy worn equipment which is damaged but cost less than new one, and between levels you can restock and repair you vehicles as well. Once you select a level to play you will be shown a briefing where you can view any information there is about enemy troop deployment and such so you can think up a strategy.

Once you are in the area itself you can command the four squads simultaniously and you can direct them to drive to a certain area. Things like speed, formation and wether or not to use a smoke trail are all options available to you. On the overhead map you can view troop movements but the enemy will often stay in hiding until you come close so you better hide in the woods to get an advantage. Once your tanks are in place you will have to personally command the fighting and take down enemy tanks. It's best to use surprise and hit and run tactics because you are outgunned pretty much all of the time. Once you are able to defeat all the opponents in the area you will gain control of it and you can go onto the next one.

Pacific islands is very much like it predecessor with a somewhat tuned up engine. The game mechanics are mostly the same but the possibility to create your own teams and outfit them is a definate plus. Ofcourse if you don't want to bother yourself with this you can always select the default options. That said it also inherits the faults of Team Yankee as the graphics are still quite plain and seeing as you will be using infrared most of the time expect to see little in the way of detail. Still the strategy and action involved is quite good and the game is a lot harder than before so if you're looking for a challenge then check this game out.
