- Xiphos -

There have been plenty of space shooter around of which I remember wing commander and elite the most. While wing commander is action based with a nice plot, elite has a vast world to discover and it allows you to trade and mine if your not into too much action. Xiphos is a straight shooter with a some thin plot about a computer that has gone haywire and you have to travel to the core and destroy it.

Travelling in space is a somewhat tedious affair because as the name suggest there isn't much there except empty space. Ofcourse being an action game there are plenty of enemies prowling around so at least you won't have to get bored by all that blackness. You can dogfight enemies with your trusty lasercannon which you can upgrade later as well as get new armor for you ship. Sadly though you cannot change vessels so you are stuck with the same one for the entire game. You can roam the galaxy freely which is a good thing but sadly the gameplay is limited to fighting enemy ships and there is no trading to broaden the scope of the game.

Xiphos is one of the many space shooters and altough it wasn't bad at the time the options that are available in the game simply don't last for ages. Without any proper things to do like trading and stuff you are left with a basic shooter which is ok if you like that sort of thing but the game fails to hold my interest for too long. Give it a go if you like space shooters though.
