- Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego -

The Carmen Sandiego are problably the most wellknown educational games around with several sequels that have been released on a number of different systems. In the game you play a detective who has to capture criminals that are running around somewhere. At the start of each mission you are given some clues and a starting point from which to begin you investigation. You'll have to gather new clues by talking to people at the local places of interest to find out where to go next. Each criminal you capture will increase the difficulty level until you finally come to Carmen Sandiego herself.

At first you'll be a rookie and the interpol computer will welcome you but soon you'll get a report of some important artefact being stolen somewhere in the world. Some of these can be quite bizarre like an entire museum in London dissappearing. You'll also get some clues who did the job and where to begin and this is where the game starts. At the scene of the crime you can go to several buildings and question the people to fnd out if they know anything about the suspect. They'll give you clues like "he said he wanted to photograph the Tahj Mahalh" which will lead you to India. Some of the clues are more subtle but because you can only travel to a limited number of places from one location it makes things somewhat easier. The closer you get to the suspect the more defined the clues become and you'll even see some henchmen still hanging around the place. Once you finally get the suspect you are given a promotion and you can get on with the next assignment.

The educational part of the game is about the many countries in the world as the title of the game suggests. You'll get some interesting information about a country once you arrive there like their national treasure or the main export product. The graphics usually only show a single place of interest which is a shame but not unexpected seeing that the game was released back when cd-roms weren't available yet. There was a re-release that came on cd and it had a lot more multimedia in it. Still this game is worth a go, you might even learn a thing or two while you're at it.

Overal rating: 7.5/10
