- Vigilante -

Vigilante is a beat'um up that is based on an ageold formula of the old 'rescue the kidnapped woman by beating up tons of gangmembers'. You have to cross five levels of sidescrolling action and by using your deadly feet and fists and the occasional nunchakas lying around the streets until you reach the dreaded boss mr.X and defeat him. This is the most basic sidescrolling affair so all action takes place on a single plane which means you can't move up or down but only left and right.

The gang in question is simply called the skinheads which surprisingly doesn't have many actual skinhead in them and the woman who was kidnapped is called Madonna which I'm pretty sure it not based on the singer as in the game she wears a long skirt which I doubt she ever did. Most of the enemies are your basic thug who simply walks up to you and tries to grab you by the troat. One of them doesn't do too much damage and you can easily shake them off but they always seem to come in swarms so it's better to knock them out with a quick punch or kick before they hold you down. Then there are the tougher foes who often like to use weapons like baseball bats, knives and even guns. These guys take several hits to go down and it important to do it quickly because they can hurt you bad especially when you're trying to take on a lot of guys at once.

Fortunately for you occasionally you will find a nunchaka lying around the ground and once you pick it up not only will you do more damage and have a greater reach but you can hit faster as well. Ofcourse at the end of each level there will be a boss-character waiting for you and in staying with tradition they are big, they can easily outpunch you and take a lot of hits to take down as well. Not only that but each of them can regenerate as well so it's important to keep hitting them until they are down, your nunchakas are a great help in this case as the long reach tends to hit them back a ways. Once the boss is dealt with it's onto the next level as the van holding Madonna always tends to get away at the last moment. The five levels are pretty varied ranging from the streets to a junkjard, a bridge and on top of a building. Each has the same formula with the sidescrolling but on some levels enemies can hit you from above or maybe come at you using a motorcycle.

Vigilante takes the classic formula of kung-fu master and puts it in a newish jacket graphically but apart from that there is little difference between the games. The graphics themselves aren't bad and the characters are fairly detailed and big (on some systems they're not). Altough the gameplay is somewhat standard you can't forget that this game was designed for the arcades and considering that the gameplay is excellent for a quick fix. The pc-engine version is practically arcade perfect so if you're gonna get it try that one.
