- Law of the west -

Law of the west is a rather unusual game, instead of simply blasting away like most wild west games you have to talk to the citizens of the town and avoid gunfights as much as possible. This is done through a screen that shows you, the sheriff, at the left side of the screen and the right side is filled by the local towns scenery. Each character you come across walks up to the middle of the screen and starts talking to you. You can then answer them from a selection of four sentences each having a different effect on the person you're talking to. You can befriend them in the process and sometimes find out where a robbery is going to take place or if you push them too much they might try and kill you! The object is to befriend as many people as possible so you can prevent more crimes and survive for one day as a sheriff. You can't always avoid a fight though so be prepared to draw when you see a robbery or when you are faced by a hitman.

The idea is good but the limitations of the game probably due to the hardware available at the time of release mean that there aren't a lot different characters you can interact with. They each have only limited amount of things they say and each time you start a game they will come in the same order and they will say exactly the same thing. That means there is practically no replay value once you complete the game.
The graphics on the C64 version aren't bad, except for the characters you interact with. They always stand at a long distant, to long to be having a conversation really but this is also due to hardware limitations. The music is quite nice with some standard western tunes that fit the mood well.
Despite it shortcomings I found the game to be fun while it lasted and a welcome relief from all the action games that were the standard at the time.

Overal rating: 7/10
