- Pitstop -

Driving games have come a long way since the beginning of video games and pitstop is among the very early ones. You drive a Formula-1 car on six different tracks, the competition is fairly easy to beat so the main challenge is to drive around as fast as you can. To make things more difficult your tires wear gradually during the race and whenever you bumb into other cars or the side the tires will wear faster. Also you have to check your fuel level because if it runs out during the race it's game over.

You start the game by selecting the kind of race to participate in, a single race or a tournament. In the single race you can choose which track you want to race on and how many laps to do but in the tournament you have to race all the tracks. There is no starting position as you are always the first and only one there. Competitors are driving along the track in many places to keep you from going faster than you'd like. Your tires wear out during the race and they change color from blue to green, yellow and red which obviously is a bad thing so when you complete a lap you can go into the pitlane for a pitstop. Here you can refuel and change tires where necessary. You have control over three guys, one for refueling which you can set in the right place and he will keep refueling but he won't stop so be carefull not to burst your fueltank which will cost you a lot of time. The tire guys don't do anything without your control so you have to change tires yourself. Don't expect pitstops of less than 10 seconds which is quite normal in real life unless you only change a single tire.

Pitstop adds something quite unique with the pistops you can do between laps but the rest of the game is still very much like other racing games. Don't expect fancy graphics or sound because they are very simple and because of hardware limitations there are a maximum of three cars on the screen at one time. I played this game very often and it might looks simplistic now but back in those days you didn't know any better. The pitstop option was (and still is) so unique that the entire game was named after it. I'd say give it a go.

Overal rating: 6.5/10

This game was released for two different systems here are some notes:
C64 Released in 1983.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 v2.0 win.
The original version.
Colecovision Released in 1983.
Game has been tested but not completed with KOLEKO v1.31.
Graphics are slighty clearer but there are some artifacts while playing, the engine sounds are horrible though. Start the game from a command line like this: koleko_vos /file pitstop.rom.
