- Ninja gaiden -

Ninja gaiden has been around for quite some time and occasionally there is some confusion about which game you're talking about because there are many different games from the same developers which are all called ninja gaiden. The game in question is a sidescrolling beat'em up where a ninja travels to the U.S.A. to find his father.

As you roam the streets of the city there will be plenty of baddies just waiting to get a piece of you but luckily you are a badass ninja and you can dispose of them in various ways. You can use the standard punches and kicks but the neat thing is that you can use the scenery to your advantage by hanging on a lamppost and kicking in different direction as well as throwing opponents into objects which will shatter them and occasionally reveal a powerup. For a ninja who is carrying a big katana which is even shown in the intro it's somewhat strange that you don't get to use it at all in the game, most likely the censors did not like it or something I don't know. The levels themselves are basic scrolling affairs but sometimes you have to walk around on ledges and if you happen to fall off it's instant death, the same goes for enemies as well so make good use of this.

The graphics are fairly detailed and has some large characters but unfortunately there is very little variation as far as enemies are concerned, you'll be facing mostly the same ones throughout most of the game. There are no sound effects to speak of as there is a music score running all the time without any effects. As far as scrolling fighters is concerned this game is somewhat a departure as it doesn't have things like weapons you can pick up that so many other do. Another thing is that the screen never stops scrolling so you will constantly walk forward which can be annoying in some places. All this adds to a somewhat average game and there are plenty of better beat'em ups around, check it out if you really like the genre only.

Overal rating: 6/10

This game was released for many different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1991.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
This one has a cool intro with the ninja slicing a badguy with his sword.
DOS Released in 1991.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS PC.
It looks like the amiga versions but the screen flickers constantly which is very annoying and makes the game rather unplayable.
NES Released in 1990 by Kemco.
Game has been tested but not completed with FCE ultra v0.98.12.
This game is considerely different from the computer versions as it doesn't feature punches and kick but you only use you sword. It wasn't uncommon to have quite different games for different systems which is why I decided to include it her.
Turbo Grafx
