- M1 Tank platoon -

As far as simulators go M1 tank platoon is pretty unique because not only can you control four M1 tanks but you also have control over all strategic aspects of your side such as where to position infantry and other vehicles. Not only that but you can even take direct control of any ground vehicle in first person view and get into the action yourself! All this is view in an entirely 3D based engine.

You start the game by selecting a team for the tank platoon or you can create one of your own. After that you can start with gunnery training, a single mission or to start a campaign. I suggest you do some training first so you can get to grips with the feel of the game. The campaing is the real meat though and you get to play a series of missions in sequence. Before starting though you can select the level of the enemy from fresh meat to elite guards, other things to do before a mission is to study the briefing and arm you craft.

When the campaign has started you view the game from an overhead map which is entirely shown in 3D so you can zoom in and out. On the right of the screen are the vehicles and troops in your command and the great thing is that you can take control of almost all of them. This will take you to a first person view of the person in question so you can take control of the driver, commander or gunmen. When you leave them alone they will act themselves and when you succesfully complete missions the men will also gain experience and become better. Completing missions themselves also has an effect on future missions as well, do well and the enemy will station more troops so the missions will become harder. On the other hand failed missions will at first be not much of a problem but fail too often and you might find yourself outnumbered by the enemy as your supplies become in short supply.

The graphics are entirely in 3D including the views and the overhead map which at the time of release was very uncommon. Compared to newer games there is very little detail as most of the game consists of green fields and tanks. There is an option in the game to lower the detail for slower computers or more detail for faster ones. On the PC this is pretty useless these days as they are fast enough but on the amiga this gives you the option for a smoother game with less detail. Sounds aren't really common and mostly just standard sound effects so don't expect too much in that category.

M1 Tank platoon is a pretty varied game that allows you to either play the strategic part or to get into the action by controlling one of your own vehicles. This combined with the then revolutionary graphics made this one great simulation. Anyone looking for a challenging strategic simulation should check out this game you won't regret it.

Overal rating: 7/10

This game was released for two different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
Apart from some loading times it's fairly similar to the pc's. The detail option actually smoothens the game somewhat.
DOS Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS PC.
Altough it seems to work properly on a windows machine when starting a campaing/mission it will ask for disk B or C, use dosbox or a real DOS pc to play the game and it will work properly.
