- Kings of the beach -

Beach volley is pretty popular in some countries but the thing is you have to have good weather to play it and in many countries the environment simply doesn't allow it. Kings of the beach is such a game and you can practice shots on the beach as well as compete in single matches or a tournament. Unlike classic volleyball you don't have five players on each side but instead you have two players and it is played in the sand making it harder.

Once you start the game you are shown the bio's of the two characters you can play (Randy and Sinjin) and you are presented with a map of the area where you can visit the various different places. Here you can train for different skills like defending and attacking or you can participate in competition. You can either play a single match or compete in the tournament. A game is played until one side has 15 points but to keep it fair you switch sides after one team has made five points. You can score points by smashing the ball into the opponents playing area and if they are not able to return you get a point. You only get points if your side served the ball but if you didn't control of the ball will be given to you. There are three distinct actions you can take which is catching the ball with you forearms to keep it on your side, volleying the ball to prepare for a smash and ofcourse the smash itself. The options available to you are limited because each side can only touch the ball a maximum of three times before returning it to the opponents side. Fail to do that and control of the ball is automatically given to the other side.

Like many sports games this game gives me mixed feelings because I'm not really into the sport, it rains here so much that you can't even have a proper competition anyway. As a game though it translates much better than classic volleyball because there are less players which gives you a better overview of the game. The thing I don't like are the graphics because the developers decided to keep the entire playing field on the screen at a time which means that the characters are tiny. This was the setup of very early games but this game could have been better with larger characters and a scrolling playing field. Still this game focusses on the game instead of modern beach volley games which simply serve to show off ladies wearing skimpy outfits.
