- Innocent until caught -

I remember psygnosis most from a game called shadow of the beast, a really goodlooking actiong game that technically stood out but gameplay was pretty standard. Most of their games were action so it's surprising that they developed an adventure game and it's not bad actually. In innocent until caught you play the part of Jack T. Ladd, instellar thief, and wanted by the IRS amongst others. The intro shows Jack being chased by a large vessal and after he is captured you find out it is the IRS and now they want their money in 20 days or something bad will happen to Jack. He is set down on a nearby port with only a tax bill from the IRS and nothing else, now the race is on to get the cash before it's game over for Jack.

The interface is standard as far as adventures are concerned with most of the screen taken up by the scenery and at the bottom there are the standard icons for actions such as talk, pick up, use etc. The inventory is a simple box where you can drop your items randomly but there is now way to scroll through the inventory so when you have a lot of items things can become somewhat crowded. On the lower left corner there is something special as it shows an overhead map of the area with every exit on the map and whenever you look at an object it will switch to a closeup of the area your mouse is in making it easier to see small items. Not only that but this is quite necessary as examining items close will reveal more information about it as well as your possible actions with that item.

Adventuring is pretty much like others of its kind and you have to solve puzzles in order to get certain items which will help you further. None of the problems should be too difficult as long as you remember to check everthing carefully and talk to all the people. Talking is done by choosing questions to ask and whenever something comes up of interest it will be underlined and you can click on the word in question to ask about it. Like so many adventures of that time this game also contains a maze, something I really dislike but pretty much unavoidable as they became almost a standard within the genre.

Innocent until caught isn't an adventure that really distinguishes itself from others but that is not necessarily a bad thing because I like this kind of game quite a lot. The graphics are pretty much what you would expect from the time with 256 color VGA screens and the music fits the mood ok. For casual adventurers there are better games around but there must have been plenty of others that agreed with me that the game was good because there was also a sequel made. If you're looking for a adventure game you haven't played yet then this game might be a good distraction for you.
