- Golden axe -

Golden axe is an arcade game where you can choose from three characters to fight against the forces of Death adder and ultimately to destroy him. You will face hordes of his troops and at the end of the levels there will be a boss waiting for you as well. You can use magic as a smart bomb to inflict damage to all the enemies onscreen and you replenish your magic power by collecting flasks from little thieves running around.

You can choose from a barbarian, amazon or a dwarf and altough each has the same basic moves they all have different magic powers. The dwarf has the least powrfull magic and uses lightning magic, the barbarian has earth magic and the amazon has the most powerfull fire magic. You can increase your magic attack by collecting flasks but when you cast the spell you will use all the flasks you carry so if you want to uses the most powerfull attack you'll have to refrain from using it until you are fully loaded. The normal attacks are your basic sword fighting tactics as well as a rush attack and jumping attacks.

Occasionally you come across characters riding on a beast and if you knock them down you can even get on it yourself. There are three different beasts available, a weird one with a long tail that you can use to attack and two different types of firebreathing dragons. The levels are mostly the same but between levels you see a progress map that is drawn and some of the levels take place on top of giant animals, a pretty neat idea but the gameplay doesn't change because of this. The enemies are varied with your standard axewielding soldiers and amazons and later on you will encounter skeletons and huge knights. There is also a cool feature where if you wait too long a pair of skeletons will pop out and attack you, I used to do this in the arcades just to increase playing time.

The graphics on most of the versions is pretty close to the original and the only thing missing is that when you defeat enemies they would turn to stone and stay visable, true it doesn't change the game at all but it is simply fun to see all the enemies lying on the ground when you are still fighting. The arcade sequel, which was never converted to home systems, is probably one of my favorite scrolling fighters of all time having a fourplayer simultanious mode, tons of weird enemies and you can even choose a route to travel to increase the replay value. This game is still excellent though and especially with a second player I'm sure you'll have some fun with it so check it out.

Overal rating: 8/10

Excellent conversion for the PC but unfortunately the control are rather awkward, you have to use the numeric keypad to move but the firebutton is the 5 key, a rather weird option and you can't change it.
