Whenever there is a strategy game that is set in middle ages England it always reminds me of defender of the crown. Vikings is quite a different kind of game though as it is a pure strategy game and it does not have minigames or flashy graphics. You start the game by configuring your characters name and title, you can also change the computer opponents to human ones. There are six players each game and you cannot change this number but this is mainly because the map is very large and it will take a while before you come into contact with each other.

You can pick your starting territory from anywhere on the map, including not only current day England and Ireland but also parts of Scandinavia and Iceland, and all of the surrounding areas become directly under your control as well so it's important to choose a good patch of land. Directly after that you start your turn and there is plenty for you to do as you need to harvest food to feed your people, keep them happy and collect taxes.

Collecting money is a vital part of the game as you need plenty of money to conquer all the lands and though you start simple with swordsmen, pikemen and archers, later on you have to build fortresses or improve existing ones. To conquer the territories that are not located on the mainland of England you'll need need to construct ships and docks to build them in. All this is done to conquer a set number of territories which can be set at the beginning at the game but the default is 125 so there will be plenty for you to do before you can win.

Vikings is a fairly unknown game but as a strategy game I found it quite entertaining. It is a pure strategy game though with plenty of management and with absolutly no flashy bits. If you like that sort of thing I recommend you check it out but for the casual game it might be a bit too dry.

Overal rating: 7/10
