- Dragon's lair -

Dragon's lair was released in the arcades on a laserdisc platform and it was a great attraction as the graphics were incredible compared to other games. The story puts you in the shoes of Dirk the Daring and you have to rescue the princess who has been kidnapped by Singe the dragon. Along the way you'll face plenty of other dangers and each screen you come across might hold a quick death for you.

If this sounds like pretty much every game other game you are correct but playing the game is something else. Each scene starts with Dirk walking or running around and whenever there is danger you have to react by pushing the joystick in the correct direction or pushing the action button so that he can avoid getting killed. That's right you really don't get to control Dirk and if you happen to choose the wrong direction it will lead to a quick death. This goes for each new screen so you'll have to memorize what to do.

Even though the graphics are very nice with detailed background and cartoonish characters it still can't save the game from being extremely weak in the gameplay department. This is supported by the fact that the game has a cheat which plays the game for you and you can watch it like a cartoon. There have been plenty of game like this made including some sequels by the same company and none of them improved much in the gameplay department. I guess it's worth a go and if you use the cheat you can see the entire game to entertain you for a while but once you're done there is no real replay value.

Overal rating: 5/10

This game was released for two different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
There are some loading times between levels but it's not too bad but you'll have to swap disk which can get annoying. It also has an option in the beginning for infinite lives or to let the game play by itself so you can watch.
Others This version is not available.
DOS released in 1989.

The game was later released on a number of systems, it came on CD and it has improved graphics but the original conversion was only on the amiga and DOS.
