- Rocket Ranger -

It is the year 2040 and it's been a hundred years since the Nazi's won the second world war. The world hasn't been the same but the scientist who are now forced to work for them plan to change history itself by sending a few items back in time to defeat the Nazi's in 1940 before they are able to win the war. You are a scientist in 1940 working at Fort Dix trying to come up with a weapon that might help the war effort when four object appear out of thin air, a rocket pack, laser gun, secret codewheel and a communicator. Back in 1940 the Nazi's have the key to winning the war which is a substance called Lunarium which when turned into a bomb greatly decreases the IQ of men rendering them unable to defend themselves while the Nazi's invade their country. The lunarium is mined on a secret base stationed on the moon and the ultimate goal is to destroy this base.

You start at base Fort Dix, New Jersey where you have several options available to you, you can go to the warroom where the strategic part of the game is played out. Here you can view the nazi efficiency which starts at 80% and the countries that they occupy. Five spies are stationed across the world and you have to talk to them to find out possible targets so that you can attack them and decrease the efficiency or to find parts to build a lunar rocket. There are also two lunarium factories where bombs are being build and these two are also vital targets. Don't spend too much time in the warroom either because if you stay on the base longer than twelve months you will be arrested for cowardise and the war will be lost.

After you check your spies and the countries you can go to cause some havoc, you have to load your personal rocket with lunarium so that you can fly. Yes that's right you also need lunarium but your supply is limited so you have to get some more by visiting other countries and raid the lunarium factories. When you decide which country to go to first you have to use the codewheel to figure out exactly how much lunarium to use and your off. Flying isn't easy though and you will have to play a hilarious action sequence where you try and get enough speed for takeoff. Fail three times and you automatically take off but you will loose precious time training so it's important you get the hang of things quickly.

When you get to the destionation you will often have to play minigames such as fighting enemy planes and getting into fistfights with guards. In your travels you also have to find Professor Barnstoff, a brilliant scientist who is being forced to develop lunarium based weapons. If the nazi's succeed in getting him to the moon he will increase their effectiveness to 100 percent making it impossible to win the war. Can you find the professor, his daughter and defeat the nazi's almost singlehandedly or will mankind be subject to a 1000 year reich?

Rocket ranger is a classic game from Cinemaware that incoperates all the elements that made their games so enjoyable. Most of the game revolves around action sequences with some strategic elements and altough a single game doesn't last more than one hour there will be plenty for you to do before you can beat the game. The graphics are very nice with large characters running around the screen and detailed backgrounds. I really enjoyed this game and it's mix of gameplay styles and this probably goes for any Cinemaware fan. Anyone else should check it out as well though as you won't find games like this very often.

This game was released for several different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1988.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
The original and best version, it also has some cinematic screen that the other version don't have.
C64 Released in 1988.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 v2.0 win.
It's surprising how well this conversion was done considering the limited hardware capabilities, you do have to swap disks though because of the large graphics.
DOS Released in 1988.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS and Win2k PC.
There are some problems with the game as it runs too fast on most systems making it very difficult to take off.
NES Released in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with FCE ultra v0.98.12.
The story was changed from Nazi occupation in 1940 to aliens invading in the year 1990. They didn't change the rest of the game though and apparently the aliens use zeppelins and piston engine planes, pretty sad.
Others Apple released in 1988.
Atari ST released in 1988.
Both of these versions have a lot technical issues and are therefore not available.
