- Night breed -

Back in the golden days of computer games (to me at least), in the 80's and 90's, Ocean released tons of games and I especially remember them for games based on movies. Many of them were subpar though and they were simple platform games that offered little extra above any standard platformer. Night breed has to be put in that category I'm afraid and it's a shame because it's quite a good horror movie.

The story goes like this: you are Boone and you have been treated for scizofrenia by Decker, a shrink who believes that you are responsible for a number of murders. He says that you have 24 hours to turn yourself in before he goes to the police. After you are put into an institution one of the men there claims there is a place called Midian where all sinners will be forgiven and can live there for eternity. This is also the place where a race called the nightbreed are supposed to live. You decide to look for this place but Decker calls in the help of the local police who happens to run a armed band called the sons of the free. They set out to find you and they will destroy anyone who gets in their way. Can you escape and fulfill the prophecy of the one who is to save the nightbreed from destruction.

The game itself is a simple platformer / action game that starts in the graveyard leading to midian. Here you will have to battle the sons of the free and the nightbreed as well while you look for the entrance to midian. You can only fight with you hands and feet but defeating the sons will occasionally make them drop a gun which you can use for yourself. The levels are mazelike and there is little to give you any clues as all the screens look exactly the same. At the end of some levels there is a big character guarding the exit and you have to figure out how to get past him as usually you can't defeat them in combat.

I loved night breed the movie but this game proves once again that movies usually don't make good games especially if they turn it into another platform game. In a suprising move for ocean though they made a second game about night breed called the interactive movie which has some adventuring parts and a number of minigames which follows the plot of the movie more. That game isn't too bad but unfortunately I can't really recommend this game to anyone unless you are a diehard night breed fan.
