- Midnight resistance -

Midnight resistance is a shooter where you control a soldier blasting his way across a horde of baddies. Along the way some of the soldiers drop keys which you can pick up and in between levels you can unlock powerfull weapons which can help you. Among the weapons are threeway shots and a flamethrower but you can also get shields and smartbombs. You can shoot in all directions if you hold the button and rotate the stick and this is required in some of the levels as they will have you crawling between levels to reach your goal. At the end of the level there will be a big boss waiting for you which you will have to destroy if you are to advance to the next level. If you get hit you will immediately drop any weapons special weapons you are carrying so be carefull not to bump into anything. The weapons can be picked up but occasionally they drop out of bound and you are stuck with a single shot gun.

Midnight resistance was originally released in the arcades and it used a wheel to control your aim which allowed you to shoot in a 360 degree circle. The home versions didn't have such controls so the game lost a bit of it's uniqueness in the translation process. The controls are now done so that you have to point the stick where you want to shoot but for instance when you move the stick up you also jump up which can kill you during a fight and can be quite annoying. The thing I like the most however is the buying of weapons between the levels and as you can only hold six keys to unlock them you'll have to think carefully before you select one.

The graphics are ok but it does not have proper scrolling, instead when you move to the edge of the screen it moves halfway forward. I have no idea why they did this as is makes it far more difficult to see oncoming enemies. The best version is the amiga one but apparently it doesn't like emulators because I tried five different versions and none of them worked properly which is a shame. Altough the game is nothing spectacular I did enjoy it quite a lot so it's worth checking out.

Overal rating: 7/10

This game was released for several different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1990.
The best version there is and it even has a couple of trainers to help.
Amstrad CPC Released in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with winAPE v2.0 A6.
Atari ST Released in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with Steem v3.2.
This looks the same as the amiga version but without proper scrolling and music, still of all the version available this is the best.
C64 Released in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 v2.0 win.
Of the 8-bit versions this is the best.
Released in 1990.
Surprisingly this isn't as good as you'd think, the screen is much smaller than what the genesis is capeable off.
ZX Spectrum Released in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with emuZwin v2.5.
This plays very slowly to a point where it becomes annoying.
