- Oil imperium -

Business games have been around for ages but few of them combine the strategic parts with arcade sequences. Oil imperium is a game where you have to start and run your own oil business. The game is always played with four players and you can select from a number of different goals like being the best after three years or to become the sole supplier of oil in the world. If you don't have any people hanging around to play the game the computer can be any of the three remaining players.

You start the game with 5 million dollars and with that you have to buy a piece of land on which to drill for oil, an oil tank for storage and your off to become an oil tycoon. You can select from land all over the world but before you can buy any you have to buy a permit for that continent so at the start you are limited in your choices. Each continent has 24 different patches of land though so you won't run out of choices too soon. It's important to survey a piece of land first because not all of them will contain a lot of oil and you wouldn't want to waste a million on a piece of dry land. After you buy land you can immediately start drilling for oil and you can choose to do it yourself or to have a specialist do it which will cost you a load of money. If you do it yourself you will have to play a minigame in which you must drill as fast as possible without breaking the drill or it will take time and money to repair the rig. If you strike oil then you will get a daily amount of oil which you can sell to make a profit and buy more land and equipment.

There are three other companies who are also in the same business though and they can use tactics like sabotage and propaganda to upset your business but all of these options are also available to you. Don't be too sqeamish about using them either because you have to win this thing at all costs! Sometimes sabotage or simply bad luck will result in one of your oil fields burning which leads to another arcade sequence that has you using explosives to stop the fires. The arcade sequences don't come so often that you get tired of them and they can be skipped but that does come at a price. At the end of each month your results will be calculated as well as your competitors so you can see who has the lead.

The graphics and sounds aren't really anything spectacular as this is still mostly a strategic game and the arcade sequences are quite short. The main part of the game is great with plenty for you to do so you won't get bored with it quickly. This game really reminds me of Ports of call which had a very similar interface and it has you running a shipping imperium but the game mechanics are very much alike. Anyone interestes in strategic business games should definately check this game out and others might give it a try as well.
